MASTER(ED) IT!
If you’re
thinking about studying a Master’s abroad, you’ll probably have a fair few
expectations about life as an international postgraduate. These might be to do
with the nationality of your future friends, the difficulty of your course and
the lifestyle you’ll lead when you arrive in your new home.
For me, the
ideas of Master’s abroad wasn’t exactly in the place I ended up doing it at. Searching
and applying far and wide from New Zealand to Prague and getting rejected, demoralized
me to the core. I was a fresh bachelors graduated in Dubai, who couldn’t find a
job at all and was sitting at home -doing nothing.
Almost two
years ago, in September 2017, I began my Masters in Malaysia at Taylor’s university.
I opted for the course of Master of media and communication and had zero idea
of what I was going to do during or after the studies. I also had no idea of
how much research-based component I was getting myself into although I did a mixed
mode study. I did expect my coursework modules to be more practical, but they
ended by being very research based in which I had to do a lot of reading and
research to make proposals and argumentative assignments rather than technical
aspects. Initially, I was a little disappointed, but soon after I decided to
turn around the situation and put it to good use. By the end of my masters
while doing my thesis, I was mostly free as I had no classes, so I decided to opt
for an internship which will make sure I have something on my CV by the end of
this degree.
Since I was
a communication student, I also decided to get involved in my universities open
days where I got to interact with incoming prospects and put your qualities to
good use, make new friends or just get out of your comfort zone. That will also
look great on the CV. But most importantly, besides all the research and
thinking about enhancing your CV, don’t forget to have FUN! I made some great friends
during my master’s course and I can’t express how much more enjoyable spending
hours in university become with good friends.
So, recently
in October 2019, I can gladly say, I MASTERED! I am an official Master of
Communication, hoping to publish my paper and commit to a full-time job in
Malaysia. It’s easy to take a set of assumptions with you go abroad to study,
but it’s important not to let them affect your time abroad (this goes for undergraduate students as well!).
Psst...I also dressed up for the occasion!
Let's see what life has planned now.
...XOXO...
